? THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION - Acting Scene Performed by Cody Martin

A performed scene from The Shawshank Redemption between Andy and Red, useful as scene study material for the confession, the storm speech and the Buxton promise.

6 Things Actors Should Know About Performing the Shawshank Redemption Yard Scene

Drawn from what is actually said on camera, so you can decide whether to spend the 5:48 watching it.

The scene opens with a confession, not a complaint

Andy's first move is to admit responsibility for his wife's death without pulling the trigger: "I drove her away and she died because of it. Because of me. Who I am." Red's answer, "That don't make you a murderer. Bad husband, maybe," is what lets the scene continue. The actor playing Andy has to land the confession before Red can push back.

The storm speech is an argument, not a mood

Red's line about luck is answered with a specific image: some folks sit in the living room and enjoy the rain while the house next door gets torn out of the ground. "It's just my turn, that's all. I was in the path of the storm." It works as reasoning under pressure, not as poetry, and the tag "I just didn't think it would go on as long as it has" is where the cost shows.

Zihuatanejo is played as a plan, not a fantasy

Andy names the Pacific, a little hotel on the beach, a beat-up old johnboat fixed up like brand new, and the line that the Pacific "has no memory." He then defends it as reasonable: "the mistakes I made, I paid for and then some. So that little hotel, that boat, I don't think it's too much to want." The detail is what keeps it from sounding like drifting.

Red's obstacle is that he believes he cannot leave

Red calls himself institutionalized and compares himself to Brooks Hatlen. His reason is concrete: "In here, I'm the guy who can get it for you. Out there, all you need are yellow pages." The Pacific frightens him because it is something so big it would scare the hell out of him. That fear is what he is defending when he snaps, "Pipe dreams. Mexico's down there. You are in here."

The turn lands on a single line of choice

After Red's "That's the way it is," Andy agrees with every fact and reframes it anyway: "Mexico is down there. And I'm in here. Just it comes down to one choice, really. You get busy living or you get busy dying." The agreement has to be genuine for the reframe to have weight.

The Buxton instructions are the real request

The scene ends with a task, not a farewell. Andy describes the hayfield near Buxton, a long rock wall with a big oak at the north end, "something out of a Robert Frost poem," the spot where he proposed. He asks for a promise, points to a piece of black obsidian glass that has "no earthly business being in Maine," and refuses to say what is buried under it.

You know where Buxton is? - Lots of hayfields there. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. One in particular. It's got a long rock wall with a big oak at the north end. Something out of a Robert Frost poem. It's where I asked my wife to marry me. We used to make love up under that oak tree. Go out there, have a little picnic. I asked and she said, "Yeah." - [snorts] - Promise me, Red, you make it out of here, you find that spot. Somewhere along that wall. They call it black obsidian glass.
