6 Things Actors Should Know About Choosing Social Networks
Drawn from what is actually said on camera, so you can decide whether to
spend the 3:18 watching it.
Pick platforms by career goal, not by habit
Before joining any network, ask whether it will actually move your acting career forward. Choosing the platform where your friends already hang out is a way to lose time. The right answer is different for every actor because it depends on what you want the account to do.
New connections and existing ones live on different platforms
If your goal is to get on the radar of people you have not met and widen your circle, a Facebook profile will not do it. Twitter and Instagram are built for making those new connections. If your goal is staying top of mind with people you have already worked with, Facebook is a strong place for that.
If forced to name two platforms, Heidi Dean picks Twitter and Instagram. They keep you visible to people you already know, give you access to people you want to know, and make it fairly easy to grow a fan base.
Twitter comes out marginally ahead because you can organize followers into lists, which makes it simple to stay top of mind with specific groups of industry contacts.
If you are a working actor or creating content, ask whether your fans actually spend time there. A show with a young audience makes Snapchat a good home for behind the scenes content. A show with an older audience makes Facebook the better bet and Snapchat a waste of effort.
Give a platform two months before deciding you hate it
You will never get good at something you dislike, so choose networks you enjoy. The caveat is that you cannot rule one out on instinct. Learn the basics, run with it for a couple of months, then ask yourself again whether you enjoy it.
To be or not to be on social media is not the question. The real question is what network should I be on as an actor? But how do you know if Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat are right for your actor's life? We'll dive into the three questions actors have to ask themselves before joining any social network. If you're brand new here, I'm Heidi Dean. And I teach you how to rock your social media, make more connections, and create the #actorslife of your dreams. Now I get this question all the time. And the answer's really different for every actor. What's important is that you choose social networks that are gonna help you reach your career goals faster, not just the platforms where your friends hang out where you're just gonna be wasting your time. So before starting on a new platform, always ask yourself, "Is this platform gonna help me reach my acting career goals?" For example, if your goal for social media as an actor is to get on the radar of new people in the business just to really expand your connections and know more people, well, then using your Facebook profile isn't really gonna help you reach that goal. Platforms like Twitter and Instagram are much better for creating these new connections. But if your big goal for using social media for your career is to really just stay top of mind with your existing connections, the people you've already worked with in the business, then hey, that Facebook profile is a fantastic place to do it.
Now if I had to pick just two platforms that really help most actors reach their career goals faster, I'd say Twitter and Instagram. Because they help us easily stay top of mind with the people we already know. They give us access to the people we want to know. Plus, they're fairly easy to grow a fan base. I'd say Twitter has a slight edge because we can organize our followers into Twitter list to easily stay top of mind with them. But really, both Instagram and Twitter are fantastic platforms to help most actors reach their career goals on social media. Now if you're a working actor or you're creating content, you also need to ask yourself, "Do my fans spend time on this platform?" Now if you're on a show with a very young demographic, then Snapchat may be a fantastic place for you to connect with the fans of the show and give them that behind the scenes content. But if you're on a show with a much older demographic, then Facebook might be the better place to play and Snapchat might just be a waste of your time. So you always need to ask yourself, "Are the fans of the show or my content on this platform?" And lastly, always ask yourself, "Is this a platform that I enjoy?" You're never gonna get good at something that you don't like. So make sure you choose platforms that make you happy. Now a little disclaimer here though. Don't just say you don't like a platform without learning the 101 and giving it a chance for a couple months.
Then go back and ask yourself, "Is this a platform I enjoy?" So what platforms should you be on? Make sure the network is helping you reach your career goals. Always ask yourself, "Are my fans on this platform?" And, "Is this a platform I enjoy?" Your answers to those questions will tell you exactly where you need to be.
