Submitting is easy, getting called in is the profile

Pressing submit on a casting site takes a second, but the audition comes from what casting sees when they open the profile. The material on the page is what decides whether you get brought in, so the work is in strengthening the profile itself.

Carry at least two headshots with genuinely different looks

Two shots is the minimum, and they have to read as separate looks. Hair down in one and up in the next does not count. The example given: clean-shaven business professional in one, a bad boy look with some stubble in the other.

Footage matters most when casting has no time

When casting has very little time to decide who to bring in, having footage on the profile is what gets you looked at. It is harder to have when you are starting out, but it is worth prioritizing.

Break the reel into clips by genre or role type

Many actors upload one full demo reel. The problem: you submit for a comedic role and the reel opens with dramatic material, or has no comedy on it at all. Split the footage into clips organized by genre or by the types of roles you play.

Bad footage works against you, so get honest feedback

Having footage is good, having footage that hurts you is worse. At the non-union level a self-recorded monologue or scene is acceptable, but the acting has to be good. Get honest feedback on it before you put it on a profile and start submitting.
