Nobody is discovered walking down the street

The fantasy is specific and it is worth naming because so many people are quietly waiting on it. It does not happen. What replaces it is deliberately being in the places where you will meet people, which is a plan rather than a hope.

The auditions that did not land built the one that did

The student who suddenly became famous had been auditioning steadily for a long time first. Those rooms were not failures on the way to a success. They are the reason the breakthrough audition went the way it did.

One person you worked with can hand you the next job

A student of hers is currently reading opposite a major actor purely because that actor had seen him work and suggested him. He may not get it. He was in the running at all because somebody in a room had watched him and remembered.

Ask the questions that break the story down

How did they get that agent. Who did they know. Who had they worked with before. Applied to anyone whose rise looks inexplicable, those three questions almost always produce an ordinary chain of people, and that chain is something you can build too.

No overnight successes. This idea that you're going to go walking down the street and somebody's going to say, "You, I want you to be our next actor in something." Nope. I want you to be able to be out there, the places where you're going to meet people. Nobody makes somebody a star overnight. I've had actors, students of mine, that have suddenly hit it big, suddenly become very famous, get this one big movie, and then this starts their whole career. People are like, - [sighs] - "Wow, now she's somebody. I was just in class with her." Well, yeah, you were just in class with her. She was in class. She was auditioning for other things before she got the one that really broke her through. And all of those other auditions that she had that she didn't get helped lead to this big breakthrough that now she's a huge star and everybody knows her name. But, there is no suddenly. There is no overnight. There is a lot of work in between, and I don't want you to forget about that. Okay. So, you've never heard of someone before, and all of a sudden, you're seeing them everywhere, and you're thinking, "How did they become this overnight success?" Again, all of the networking that you haven't seen, as well as the classes. How They got an agent, right? How did they do that? Who did they know? Who did they meet? Who have they worked with before? You know how often times one person who you work with on set, or work with in class, or work with somewhere else, can get you another job, can recommend you to somebody else? I have that happening right now in my class. I have somebody who was looking for a role opposite an amazing actor, and one of my students is reading for it. Because he was in class, because he was seen by this other actor who was like, I think he would be right. Don't know if he's going to get the role, but he got the opportunity because he networked.
