6 Things Actors Should Know About Filtering Audition Notices in Gmail
Drawn from what is actually said on camera, so you can decide whether to
spend the 3:43 watching it.
Start from an email you already received
Log into Gmail and select the breakdown emails you want to filter. Then go to More and choose "Filter messages like these." Gmail builds the filter criteria from those messages for you, so you never have to type out sender addresses by hand.
On the filter options screen, select "Create filter with this search," then tick "Skip the Inbox" and "Apply the label." Create a new label rather than reusing an old one. The label appears immediately as a folder in the left-hand column.
Name one folder breakdowns and one audition notices
The same process is repeated twice: one filter labeled "breakdowns" and a second filter labeled "audition notices," each built from a selected email of that type. The label name is yours to pick, so use whatever wording matches what your casting sites actually send.
Tick apply filter to matching conversations to clear the backlog
Checking "Also apply filter to matching conversations" sweeps the emails already sitting in your inbox into the new folder. In the audition notices example it caught six existing conversations, so the folder is useful the moment you create it.
Applying the filter to existing conversations also moved breakdowns that had already been deleted back into the new folder. Be mindful of that when you run the filter, or you will find old discarded notices sitting alongside the current ones.
Once both filters exist, every incoming breakdown and audition notice goes straight to its folder instead of your main inbox. That removes the habit of opening breakdowns immediately just to stop them taking over, and lets you work through them when you are ready to submit.
