5 Things Actors Should Know About Building an Audition Advantage
Drawn from what is actually said on camera, so you can decide whether to
spend the 2:35 watching it.
Showing up and reading is not a strategy
Aaron Marcus describes his early auditions as walking in, reading the lines and walking out with no idea what he was doing. He had nothing planned for before the audition and no techniques to use once he was in the room. Recognizing that gap is what pushed him to start training.
Marcus credits his booking record to deciding to study rather than keep guessing, and he says he still studies with other people today. His framing is a direct correlation between education and success, not talent alone.
Script analysis and preparation come before technique
The skills he lists in order are how to prepare, how to analyze scripts, and then techniques to use during the audition itself. The implication is that most of the work an actor controls happens before the reader ever says a line.
Marcus points out that certain kinds of auditions call for improv, so it is a skill to have ready rather than something to learn on the spot. He treats it as a separate competency alongside scripted reading.
Commercial models get sent to TV commercial auditions
If you think of yourself as print or commercial modeling only, Marcus says it is not unusual to be asked to audition for a television commercial. That means audition craft, home recording setups, and ear prompter or teleprompter skills apply to you too.
